29271-013: GMS: East-West Economic Corridor

Project Data Sheet (PDS): Details

Description

The Project is part of the larger East-West Transport Corridor Project, which includes components in Thailand, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam. The objective of the larger project is to create a road transport corridor linking north-east Thailand through Lao PDR to Da Nang Port in Viet Nam. The scope of the proposed Bank-financed Project is assisting the Government of Lao with improving about 78 km of Road No. 9 between Maung Phin and the border with Viet Nam. The improvement will include reconstructing the existing largely-failed road pavement to a two lane bituminous surface treatment standard construction of new bridges and other drainage structures, and repair of existing structures, and ancillary works.

Summary of Environmental and Social Aspects

No sensitive areas will suffer negative environmental impacts. The Project will benefit to people living around the East-West Corridor including better road accessibility with associated time savings, reduced transport costs resulting in improved access to markets for local products and handicrafts, and local people's access to a greater range of imported consumer goods at cheaper prices, improved access to health, education and others services. For the medium to long term, people will have access to employment opportunities, and improve the quality of life through increased flow of goods, services, and economic activities and more contact with outside influences.

Project Data Sheets (PDS) contain summary information on the project or program. Because the PDS is a work in progress, some information may not be included in its initial version but will be added as it becomes available. Information about proposed projects is tentative and indicative.
