Description

The purpose of the RETA is to (i) contribute to regional debate on economic cost/benefits of unilateral and regional action on mitigation and adaptation; (ii) raise awareness and alert public opinion to the urgency of the climate change challenges, and its potential socio-economic impact on the participating countries, while, at the same time, informing other stakeholders (e.g. civil society, academia, media, NGOs, private sector and the donor community); and (iii) indirectly support regional government and private sector actions to implement policies to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The RETA will cover six (6) developing member countries (DMCs), namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

Impact

Consensus achieved among regional and country-level decision-makers on the steps needed to address climate change in Southeast Asia including the adoption of investment programs, plans, policies, and/or other actions to adapt development to expected future climatic conditions, among others.

Project Outcome

Description of Outcome

Regional and Country-level decision-makers of participating governments have an improved understanding of the cost of climate change and the necessary actions and policies they must adopt to address climate change-related issues.

Implementation Progress

Description of Project Outputs

The key deliverable will be a comprehensive review report on economics of climate change in Southeast Asia. The report will provide insights into and recommendations for future domestic and regional policies on climate change. The TA activities include: (i) a study on economics of climate change and sustainable development in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam), including assessing the impact of climate change at both national and regional levels; (ii) national and regional consultations; (iii) a study of both GHG mitigation and climate adaptation policy options domestically and regionally; (iv) dissemination of the findings of the study at the key multilateral events such as the International Stern Symposium scheduled for the second quarter of 2008, UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP) 14, 2008.
